How to compare mobile surveillance trailers

Comparing providers in this category is unusually hard, for a structural reason: they publish wildly different amounts of information, so comparing their websites mostly measures their marketing strategy. This guide gives you a method that works around that — decide the commercial model first, then put one identical brief in front of everybody.

Two structural facts shape any trailer comparison. Almost nobody publishes pricing, so you cannot shortlist on cost. And very few publish runtime, so you cannot shortlist on the specification that matters most. Which means the comparison happens in your quote process, not on vendor websites — and the quality of your brief determines the quality of what you learn.

Step 1: Decide the commercial model before you talk to anyone

This is where most procurements go wrong. There are four models in this category and their prices are not comparable, so a shortlist spanning several of them produces a spreadsheet that cannot be read.

Leased managed program
One vendor supplies hardware, platform and service under a lease or subscription. Lowest effort, no capital outlay, least control. Suits organizations standing up many sites who do not want to operate video software.
Outsourced monitoring service
You buy detection, verification and dispatch; the units are how the provider delivers it. Suits organizations that want a certified monitoring centre and, sometimes, guard escalation from the same provider.
Managed rental
One monthly price for a defined deployment period, monitoring usually included. Suits projects with a known end date and no appetite for owning equipment.
Purchase (or dealer rental)
You own the hardware; platform and monitoring are separate decisions. Suits multi-year sites, redeployable fleets, integrators and dealers, and anyone with an incumbent VMS. Some manufacturers also offer dealer rental, which gives rental economics without foreclosing ownership.

Pick one, or at most two adjacent ones, before you request quotes. If you genuinely do not know, work the utilisation arithmetic in what a mobile surveillance trailer costs first — it usually answers the question.

Step 2: Write one brief, send it to everyone

The brief does the work. Include all of this, and send the identical document to every vendor so the replies are comparable:

Sites
How many, roughly where (latitude affects solar harvest materially), and the sun exposure at each — open, partially shaded, or heavily shaded by buildings or trees.
Duration and utilisation
Months of coverage needed per site per year, and for how many years. This single figure decides rent-versus-buy.
Coverage requirement
Area in square feet or acres, what you need to see (people, vehicles, plates, faces), and at what distance. This drives camera count, type and mast height.
Sensors
Whether LPR or thermal are required. Both are patchily published across this category, so state them explicitly rather than assuming.
Retention and evidence
How many days of video you must retain, where it may be stored (some organizations have data residency rules), and what your evidence export process needs to look like.
Monitoring
Whether you want live monitoring, what should trigger an operator, and what they should be authorised to do — talk-down, dispatch, escalate to a named contact.
Existing systems
Any VMS the units must feed, and the version. This is where open-versus-closed becomes concrete.
Compliance
Whether NDAA Section 889 documentation, domestic manufacture, or any procurement standard applies. Ask for component-level documentation, not a general statement.

Step 3: Request these specific figures

Ask for numbers with their conditions attached. Each of these has a trap in it, noted.

Solar array wattage
Trap: array size alone tells you harvest capacity, not whether it covers your load. Ask what daily harvest it produces in December at your latitude.
Battery capacity in watt-hours
Trap: amp-hours without voltage is meaningless — 200 Ah at 48V is 9,600 Wh, 200 Ah at 12V is 2,400 Wh. Always convert, and ask for usable capacity rather than nameplate.
Total system draw while streaming, in watts
Trap: vendors sometimes quote camera draw only, which can be a small fraction of the total once the radio, gateway and analytics are running. Ask for system draw.
Runtime with no solar input
Trap: 'up to X days' with no stated load, temperature or depth of discharge is not verifiable. Ask for all three. Details in the runtime guide.
Recharge time to full
Trap: 'a day of sun' is not a figure. Ask for hours of usable sun, and what happens if it takes longer than a winter day provides.
Mast height and stability
Trap: height is under-weighted by most buyers but affects coverage area and depression angle more than resolution does. Also ask about wind rating and deployment time at full height.
Camera count and the power budget behind it
Trap: a mast that physically mounts six cameras may not have the watts to run six. Ask for the maximum camera count at the stated runtime.
Connectivity and failover
Trap: 'LTE' does not tell you whether it fails over between carriers or dies with one. Ask whether it is multi-carrier, whether failover is automatic, and whether satellite is available for sites with no coverage.
Recording location and retention
Trap: edge-only recording means footage is lost with a stolen unit; cloud-only means an outage is a gap. Ask which, and what happens during a connectivity loss.
AI features included at the quoted price
Trap: analytics are frequently tiered, and entry-level units may exclude them entirely. Get the specific included feature list in writing.
Remote diagnostics and remediation
Trap: 'remote management' can mean a status light or it can mean rebooting a gateway from a console. Ask what can be fixed without a site visit.
Three-year total cost
Trap: monthly figures hide term commitments and escalators. Ask for a three-year total including every recurring line.

Step 4: Treat marketing statistics as marketing

Providers in this category publish impressive-sounding figures: crimes deterred annually, police dispatches, percentage cost savings against manned guards, detection ranges in feet. Some are surely accurate. But they are self-measured, rarely define methodology, and are not independently audited, so they cannot separate two vendors.

What does separate vendors is reference customers with sites like yours. Ask for two, in your industry, at comparable scale, and actually call them. Ask what broke, how long it took to fix, and whether they would buy again.

Step 5: See it before you buy it

Three things do not survive translation into a datasheet: real deployment and strike time, whether the console is tolerable for the person using it every day, and how the coverage genuinely looks at your mast height on ground like yours. For a purchase decision, insist on seeing all three.

For a short managed rental it matters less — you are buying an outcome for a few months and the provider carries the risk. For a fleet you will own for years, a day spent on a demo is the cheapest risk reduction available.

'What is total system draw in watts while streaming, and what runtime does that give with no solar input?' It is useful because it is specific, because almost nobody volunteers it, and because the quality of the answer tells you whether the vendor has actually measured their own product. A vendor with a number, a temperature and a depth-of-discharge assumption is a different proposition from one who says 'up to eight days'.
How do I compare vendors when they publish different things?
Write one specification brief and send the identical document to every vendor, then compare the replies rather than the websites. Public disclosure in this category is wildly uneven — some providers publish full spec tables, others market outcomes and publish almost nothing — so comparing marketing pages mostly measures marketing strategy. A common brief neutralises that.
Should I trust published deterrence or crime-reduction statistics?
Treat them as vendor claims, not independent findings. Providers in this category publish figures like crimes deterred per year, police dispatches, or cost savings versus manned guards. These are typically self-measured, rarely define their methodology, and are not audited. They are legitimate marketing and may well reflect real outcomes, but they are not a basis for comparing two vendors. Ask instead for reference customers with sites resembling yours, and speak to them.
How long should a trailer procurement take?
Plan for six to ten weeks if specifications matter to you. Because almost nobody publishes pricing, you cannot shortlist on cost and must run a quote process; because few publish runtime, you will be waiting on engineering answers rather than sales answers. Budget time for a site visit or demo too — a trailer that looks equivalent on paper can differ substantially in deployment time, mast stability and console usability.
Do I need to visit a site or see a demo?
For a purchase, yes. Three things are difficult to assess from documentation: how long the unit actually takes to deploy and strike, how usable the video console is for the people who will live in it daily, and how the camera coverage really looks at your mast height on ground like yours. All three are cheap to check before you buy and expensive to discover afterwards.
